What's "default response"?

Hi teachers,

For 50 years, vigorous opposition to planned and actual meetings with the Dalai Lama by leaders of foreign countries has been China's default response.

What does default mean?

Thank you.

The "default response" is the response that they routinely and automatically make. In other words, they pump out the same standard response every time it happens.

Hi Mr. Wordy,

Thank you for your help.

Would it be correct to say that a "default" response is same as a mechanism response?

A mechanical response. Yes, it has that kind of feel, but perhaps not quite as strict as "mechanical".

Hi Mr. Wordy,

Thanks for the correction.

I'm sorry I was meaning to say "mechanism", I just learned from the the dictionary:

A usually unconscious mental and emotional pattern that shapes behavior in a given situation or environment: a defense mechanism

Could default response be described as a mechanism?

I don't think it's helpful to describe it that way. When we describe a response as "mechanical", we mean that little thought or consideration goes into it. Describing it as a "mechanism" does not have that same sense.
