What's a written presentation for court-use?

The situations is that the defendant/plaintiff (what do you refer to those involved in a particular lawsuit?) cannot make it to the appeal hearing, so that the DA/judge order him/er to send over a "written presentation"?
What is this document and what does it contain? Weirdest thing of all, I tried to google with the keywords " legal written presentations" and yet there is no relevant results.
