What's a good book on English usage for an intermediate ESL student?

In my quest to master the english language I find myself trying to translate my thoughts using an approach that isn't the most appropriate. This is, my cognitive process regarding written and spoken english has a bias towards literal translations - translating word by word.
In order to improve my skills I think a good book on English Usage will be a great asset, don't you ?
Therefore I'm here to ask your opinion on the subject, which book do you recommend for an ESL intermediate student ?
