Whatever/What for?

"Me too? Me too?" a black crow cawed from the trees above. "Can I help too?"
"Whatever for?" asked the surprised Papa squirrel. "Why don't you fly south for the winter along with the other crows?"

Does "whatever for" in the above amount to "what for?" If not, what does it mean? Thanks.
