whatever

Hi,
"No matter what he says, we won't believe him."

Is it ok to say 'Whatever he says we won't believe him.' instead?
Are 'no matter what' and 'whatever' interchangeable here? Thanks

I say yes . Some might consider "whatever he says" elliptical. Of course "whatever" has that rude nasty usage that crept into the language in the 80's.

It's understandable, but I wouldn't use it.

Thank you Marius for your answer. I have a question for you. Why did you say 'I wouldn't use it'? Do you mean you wouldn't use 'whatever' in any cases? What is wrong with it?

Do 'no matter what' and 'whatever' have any subtl

Regardless of what someone does is probably less informal (more formal?) than whatever/no matter what someone does. Two decades ago I would have said there was no choice between the last two, but now (perhaps not in UK) "whatever" is a kind of all-purpose casual expression for "Don't bother me!" Thank you very much, Avangi for your explanation. However, the word 'whatever' has several different meanings and do you mean you wouldn't use it in any cases, right?
Is it better to use 'no matter what' rather than 'whatever' in my example here or is it fine to use 'whatever' here?

Kind regards

Whatever you say, I won't believe you.
No matter what you say, I won't believe you.

No difference in meaning or style. The second sentence is longer and may seem a little clumsy to some - not to me, though.

I'll go along with CB's judgement. As I said, it's a personal thing with me, because I found the popular usage so distasteful. You might say it accurately represented the
