What would/will you do if

Hello everyone. I have a couple of questions.

Regarding the following two sentences:

(A) What would you do if you lost your passport while traveling abroad?

(B) What will you do if you lose your passport while traveling abroad?

I think that (A) is appropriate because losing one's passport is very unlikely, so the speaker should use the second conditional rather than the first conditional. But, I'm not sure if (B) is right. Does it also sound natural? If so, what's the difference between the two sentences?

Top answer

(A) You're not traveling abroad soon. Maybe you are just dreaming about the day when you might be able to travel abroad. (B) You are scheduled to travel abroad soon.

  • (A) You're not traveling abroad soon.
  • Maybe you are just dreaming about the day when you might be able to travel abroad.
  • (B) You are scheduled to travel abroad soon.
  • You are really going abroad.
  • In the right circumstances you can use either one.
