A Norwegian author has lived in Afghanistan for five months and written a book about the family she stayed with. The book has already been sold to 15 different languages, one of which is English (you'll hear about it soon enough). A translation into English means that the Afghan family can read the book. A journalist has already taken a copy to the father, who is very upset; the book tells of things he claims never to have taken place, and the knowledge of which in Afghanistan will bring dishonour on him and his family. More, some of the "revelations" in the book can put the female members of his family at risk of being physically attacked, even killed. The publisher and author deny any injustice to the man and his family. They have attempted to buy the Afghan out, but these attempts have so far failed; it looks as if he is not interested in money, which inclines me to believe his version more than the Norwegians'. What would you say/ do should you happen to be scheduled to spend time with the author? None of this is a hypothetical situation.
