For countless hours of his youth, Eddie longed for his father's attention, sitting on railings, squatting on his short pants atop tool chests in the repair shop. Often he would offer, "I can help, I can help," but the only job ____ on him was crawling beneath the worktable in the morning to pick up the screws and nails that had dropped on the floor from the day's work.

I think a possible word would be "heaped", but it does seem a little out of place.

Please note that 'on' comes after 'offered', so your word cannot be used.

How about "placed on him",

Is there also a typo earlier: "sitting in his short pants"?
It strikes me that there are a lot of "on" in this passage.
