What word could I use this in this blank?

I'd like to let my readers know that one character has the blood of a dragon in his veins. The story is also, obviously, set in medieval times so that should be taken into account. He has the ____ of a dragon. I don't want to use the word blood because it's going to be specified later. I was thinking essence or something along those lines.
