What were those belly-revealing T-shirts called?

In the early 1980s there was a flicker of popularity for short T-shirts that covered a man's shoulders and chest but revealed his belly and lower back. I think there was a word for this type of shirt, maybe it was "shimel" or "shimmel"??
(I recall the Rollins College soccer team had set of practice uniforms with this type of shirt. I don't think they played actual games in them.)
