What was the inspiration for this tradition?

The average American spends over US$900 on gifts each Christmas. That's a lot of money! So why do people give gifts at Christmas? What was the inspiration for this tradition?

Does "inspiration" in the above refer to "cause/source?" If not, what does it mean?

Thanks, Clive.
