What was lost

"Anger is a huge problem in both stories because it tears the characters relationships apart, leaving them with no way to restore what was lost."
I saw this on a YouTube video about topic sentences.
Please explain to me the grammar of "what was lost" in terms of parts of speech, especially the use of "what" I always get confused by it's use when it's not a question word.
Thanks
