What was going on

Hello.
Is 'what was going on' used sorrectly in the following passage?
On the other hand, the interpretant signs are explicitly suggestive of something. The fact that these paintings were created at the very time when the corresponding society and class involved these attributes, may imply this sign is an interpretant. Put another way, the artist was trying to represent exactly what was going on in these classes and somehow, believed in a point-to-point correspondence between the painting and the culture.

?Note that it is supposedly a formal prose and I need it to be as formal as possible'
Thanks in advance

If you're concerned that "going on" is too informal then you could replace it with "happening". The commas after "attributes" and "somehow" should be deleted. ", in my opinion.

In formal prose you should write "may imply that this sign...", in my opinion.

the original text reads 'what was present' or 'what existed'. What do I right?

Both "going on" and "happening" describe activity, so may not be right then.

When you say "what was present" or "what existed", are you referring to physical objects or to a situation/circumstance?

no, my guess is that it refers to the sociocultural backgrounds
