In this case, we don't use the "of."
They were aware that he went to prison.

But we can say, "They were aware of his problem."
And, "The thing they were aware of was that he went to prison."

(I'm not offering these as substitutes. I'm just trying to illustrate when we use "of" and when we don't.)

I don't really think the "According to him" structure is very natural. Grammatical, but not very natural.

(Sometimes they have an impolite or contentious tone.)
