What type of tenses are used in this sentence?

Sentence: Colin had tried to become a circus performer prior to a filmy career.

had tried means past perfect or past?

prior to a filmy career. Is it simple present tense?. Because right now Colin is pursuing a filmy career.

"had tried" is past perfect.

There is no tense in "prior to a filmy career" because there is no verb.

(We'd say "film career".)
