I don't see a subordinating conjunction to make it complex, but I also don't see a coordinating conjunction to make it compound.

Is it really a simple sentence?

The subordinate clause is an adjunct (adverbial) of result. We understand that as a result of Rhodesia declaring independence, it became an unrecognised state in southern Africa.

Not all subordinate clauses require subordinating conjunctions. The clause in your example is marked as subordinate by having its verb in the participle form.
