what to say when someone die

Hello,
My cousin from US passed away. What is the best way to say sorry to her family. What should we write. We didn't know her well. We met just once.
Thanks a lot

PS when someone die or when someone died

When someone dies... I'm really sorry for your loss islander; unfortunatly I haven't got a clue about what you could write them, since I've never experienced the loss of someone of my family yet... [Y]

Hello Islander

You could say:

"I was very sorry to hear about Y. My condolences to you and your family."

Thank you MrPedantic and YoHf.
Is this also ok: We are so sorry to hear about Jane. Please accept our condolences.

Yes, that's fine; though "We were so sorry..." might be more usual.
