what time is it?
if i were to ask someone the time, i have been told that the correct usage is "what time is it?"
would it be incorrect to ask "what is the time?". if incorrect, what is the gramatical error in the question.

Both 'What is (What's) the time?' and 'What time is it?' are fine in British English.
