What? The logic of the expression?

What? "advanced an argument in support of the motion that “Israel is a rogue state” that would have made any Israeli diplomat proud"? Could Israeli diplomat so "humble" as to be "glad to be deprived of self-esteem"? You support the view that "Israel is a rogue state" and the diplomat of Israel be proud of you?

Context:

For Gabriel Latner, a 19-year-old, second-year law student from Toronto, advanced an argument in support of the motion that “Israel is a rogue state” that would have made any Israeli diplomat proud.

It looks like to say that you hold the point of view that "America is a rogue state/a bad country" and American diplomats will be proud of you. That is ridiculous.
