What the conjunction links in the sentence

I know that conjunction can link words. However sometimes it is confusing to figure out which words are linked by a conjunction. Here's the sentence.

When I first started volunteering, I thought it would be a perfect way to mix work and pleasure : I could lend my medical services and do some traveling. Indeed, I did get to travel to different places and experience new cultures.
