What tehniques to hold attention for large class?

What techniques would you use in your first lesson to hold the attention of a large class and to get your students interested in the course? Please describe one or two ideas in detail rather than list many ideas. (Write 150 words)

So far, I have thought about playing music by the Beatles, showing family pics (funny ones) , my hobby interests and pics of London. This, hopefully might insight some interest.
Ask students to introduce themselves one by one, then stop and ask other students to name the students who have just introduced themselves. Or in group form, one to start, then the next to say the first students name ,then theirs and so on.
Back to whole class, introduce myself, by saying 'who am I?' Elicit responses and see who is more forward. Then reply and ask them questions. If I answer yes to a question, say do I like music, then ask students to stand if they like music , etc.
How am I do so far?

Just a few brief thoughts.

I teach adults whose English is at least 'intermediate'.

What techniques would you use in your first lesson to hold the attention of a large class

Introducing yourself is always a good idea, but I wouldn't go into too much biographical detail including things like hobbies. Older students are usually more interested in your qualifications and experience.

In some classs, most of the students already know each other.

and to get your students interested in the course? I would focus on describing the curriculum and the way the class will work, including some information about my teaching style and approach. Outline your expectations of them.

From your point of view, your main aim in your first class is to get to know the students in terms of their English needs and also their personalities.

If this is for i-to-i, the tutor who graded mine twice says a large class is a multi-level class but he doesn't say what range multi-level is. I'm currently waiting for the director to respond to my request about what the question really asks. The tutor who graded mine also says it has to be an activity where the students get to know each other, but I can't think of any activity to get 50+ students (a large group) to know each other, pay attention, and keep interested in the class.
