Speech & Pronunciation

What should a p sound like immediately after an s?

My dictionary saids if the s and the p are in the same syllable, the sound of the p would become halfway between that of b and p.

According to what I hear, people do not always pronounce according to this 'rule'.
Even my dictionary's recorded pronounciation does not seem to abide by it.

Why is that, is it because my ears are not keen or is it the rule is not rigid?

Hi, I wouldn't know about any rule that would give /p/ characteristics of /b/ and /p/. A rule that does involve /p/ and /s/, however, could be that of the absence of aspiration in case /s/ precedes /p/. pet ?

Thank you. But there is more I would like to ask.

This is what my dictionary speaks:

transplant: tra:nsp...

transport: tra:nsp?...

The transcriptions are identical.

But the sound recordings are different.

Hi,

I was taught that aspiration is usually not applied if /p/ follow /s/. Could it be that it's done for emphasis?

When they are verbs, you can hear aspirated versions clearly; when they are nouns, esp in fast tempo, you dont hear aspiration.
