What really made me notice you was/were?

This one is kind of tricky, for me at least.
Well, could you please correc the sentence below?

What really made me notice you was/were your eyes at first, but then I found out that you were more than just a thing made up of all the beauty in this world.

I meant to write correct, sorry! What I meant by correct is that I want to know if my verb tenses are correct in the sentences above or not.. It's not a message that I'm asking you to write for me.
