What "could" means in spoken English

Dear friends
my greetings to you all.
I have been wondering in what are all the situations the word "could" used in English(not as a question). Will you give the various contexts in which "could" is used and what it would mean in such a context?
It would be much helpful if I could(or should I use "can" here) get it for "would" also.(It will be very helpful if I could get some examples)
Thank you.

Basically, could means "had the ability to", "was/were able to", or "would be able to", but this is far too big a question for a forum. You need a grammar book. Try The English Verb by F.
