What portion of the two years???

Please look at the following sentence.

We are particularly interested in learning what portion of the two years Mr. Willis spent at Mainframe Resolutions was devoted exclusively to systems programming.

Could you tell me what the real identity of "what" is?
Is it a relative pronoun or just interrogative ? Do I have to translate it as how much portion of the two years?
It is very difficult for me. Could you help me with understand that sentence?

Thank you for your answer in advance.
