What part of speech of "exciting" in the phrase "exciting time"?

Hi, I think the subject of this question has explained it all, what part of speech of "exciting" in the phrase "exciting time"? Is it an adverb? Can I say that "exciting" is a gerund? I hesitate because as far as I know gerund does not modify verb. Thanks.
