What part of speech is "went" in...

Hello Everyone,

For my expository writing class in college we were asked to go research what part of speech the word "went" takes on in the sentence (since the whole class was stumped):

I went jogging.

Here is what the Collins Cobuild Dictionary of English for Advanced Learners says:

went went W

The key to understanding this sentence is that jogging is a gerund, not a verb. Therefore "went" is the simple past of the verb "to go".
