What part of speech is "that" in these sentences:?

1. I believe that pigs can fly

Here I think it is being used as a conjunction between a dependent clause and an independent clause.

2. That the boys painted the pig green annoyed the pig.

But I'm not sure if its the same here, "The boys painted the pig green" is an independent clause, but the "that" isn't between it and "annoyed the pig"
