What or Where

Hi everyone

I know this question is very basic and may seem a bit stupid, but when you look at a photograph and want to know the name and location of the place in that photograph, how do you ask?

1) What's this place?
2) Where is it? (This somehow gives me a feeling that the speaker is trying to find something ("it" being that something) so he/she asks another person to tell where he/she can find it!)

I think both are fine (maybe...???). But I'm curious to know your thoughts on this.

Thanks

You can ask the question either way, and several other ways as well. What's this place? / What place is this?

Hi,

I know this question is very basic and may seem a bit stupid, No, it's a reasonable question

Thanks, CalifJim and Clive. That was tremendously helpful. Sometimes I feel that I'm overly obssessed with good and genuine English that I spend too much time thinking about and checking the things I write, and sometimes I found myself doubting even the most trivial things, which is annoying...
