Is the following sentence grammatically correct ..

What of these things has got to be a chicken?

And is the following sentence equivalent in meaning to it ..

of these things, Which one has got the thing that makes it a chicken?

Both are very awkward - What I would expect would be "What makes this a chicken?"

It's always which of ... (plural), not what of ....

The meaning is as you say.
