What "Object" is XXXXXX? [Grammar]

We know that we can say:

What animal is in the water?

Ok, I was looking for generalize this structure form of:

What "Object" is XXXXXX?

I tried to use Object = Weather, and it didn't work!

What weather is in US today?

They told me it's wrong!

Ok I know that if we wanted to ask about the weather, we could just say:

What is the weather like today?

How is the weather today?

But I know..

I just want the reason behind why we can't use weather in that What 'Object' form, but we can for animal..

Also give me more examples with:

What "Object"?

Thanks!
