I would say something like, "What position did X finish?" in the case of a competition, which also uses ordinal numbers.  Thus, "What position is X in the order of USA presidents?" or "What position does X hold in the order of ...?"

In reality, though, I personally would ask something less formal like "do you happen to know how many presidents were before X in ...?", or "How many preside
