What movie is playing

"What movie is playing on HBO at the moment ?"

Do the natives use such a sentence to ask what movie is on at the moment on TV ?
If not , what is the best way to express a query like the above ?

Top answer

'At the moment' is a little stylized and the whole thing seems slightly formal, but it's OK. I would simply say ' What's on HBO now? '

We use the verb "playing" with movies and songs. But can we use it with "talk shows" and "soap operas" etc. as in "a nice soap is playing on channel 9" ?

As you can see, I didn't use an action verb at all.
