What kind of plural?

Hi everyone.

I was watching "friends" and the character said the sentence in bold. I wonder if the sentence is correct. Can we say "kind of plural noun" ? Shouldn't it have been; what kinds of scary-ass clowns....?

[Flipping a coin to choose between "ducks" and "clowns."]

Joey: Ducks is "Heads", because ducks have heads.

Chandler: What kind of scary-ass clowns came to your birthday?

I am confused. Could you help me?

Thanks.

It looks okay to me, at least in informal style. After all, you can say clowns of what kind ? ~ clowns of this kind, so why not what kind of clowns ?
