What kind of "here" is this?

Hi,


I can't be sure what this "Here" is doing here. Would you describe it? Does it mean like "up to this point"?



Oh, by the way, this is from a book.



and why had she taken so long to reveal herself? Here I'd thought of her as a cold-blooded person agent when she was really nothing but a slightly dopey, inexperienced speech teacher. She wasn't a bad person, MIss Samson, but her timing was off.

I know exactly what you mean. when reading it, I actually had no problem with the sentence. That "Here" is toally working and making sense. But when I tried to wirte it down in Japanese, I had no idea how I should I say it.
