What is/are the proper word(s) to describe ... ?

Hi there,

I need your help to tell me the proper word/words to describe the followings:

- When an electronic/electrical device/machine does not work in a good mannar (there is something wrong with it) .. What is/are the proper word(s) I should use that is/are enough to deliver the same meaning as this sentence?

- When the device/machine does not work at all .. What will be the proper word(s) in this case?
