What is XOXOXO?

Why do people finish letters sometimes with "XOXOXO" or something like that (I forget how many XOs they used)?
When did this trend start?
I remember there was a South American celebrity blond girl and her name was XOXO. Did she start this?
Anyway, I find it wierd. Please clarify this matter.

I didn't know that. Any idea how "O" came to mean 'hug'?
