What is what

He threatened them, saying “When I crush your bones and send you into the jail, then you will know what is what.”

Is the sentence correct? What alternatives can I use in stead of "what is what"? Thanks

Top answer

Not 'what is what', but ' What's what '-- it's a fixed phrase. ” I cannot think of an appropriate synonym of the same register.

Thanks MM. Is "beat someone to a pulp" a phrase?

Yes, a native one (AmE at least), while 'crush your bones' is not.
