So that is used to explain why something is being done.

For instance:

Please give me your e-mail address so that I can send you an e-mail.

Meaning, send me your e-mail address otherwise I won't be able to e-mail you.

That's why is used to explain the consequences of not doing something.

For instance:

Charlie: Don't put your hand on the iron!!!!

Jon: I just want to see what it's like. Oooowww! That hurt!

Charlie: That's why I told you not to touch it! Now look, you're burnt.

Does that make sense to your question. Please let me know if your example is different.

I'd add the "that" in "that's why" can refer to a positive thing as well as a negative one.

That's why she always gets an A on her tests.
