What is the word class of "south"?

Hi, teachers. Please help me.

"McLaren Vale lies south of Adelaide."

I think the verb, "lie" is an intransitive verb, so "south" is an adjective or adverb. But I also think "of Adelaide" is a noun because it seems that "of Adelaide" modifies "south". I'm confused. What is the word class of "south" in the sentence above? Please enlighten me.
