What is the subject of "was" here?

"we are already in good part arrived [to liberty], and yet from such a steep disadvantage of tyranny and superstition grounded into our principles as was beyond the manhood of a Roman recovery"

"as was beyond...recovery" - I cannot relate that "was" to anything in the sentence. Can you explain the structure of this? What "was beyond the manhood of a Roman recovery"?
