what is the semantic differences???

hi friends



can u help me ,please?? i do some of them and i wanna to see if it is right or wrong

what is the semantic differences between the following sentences??

1- the girl drowned

the girl was drowning

the answer: in the first sentence she sank and she was breathing but in the second sentence she was about to drown

2- my father has lived in america all his life

my father lived in america all his life

the answer : in the first sentence he is still living in america while in the secind sentence he isn't still

3- john plays well

john is playing well

the answer: in the first he is good player and he always plays well while in the second he is playing now

************************

4- you have been on holiday, haven't you??(falling intonation)

you have been on holiday, haven't you??(rising intonation)

( i don't know this answer))

5- will you have a cup of tea??

do you have a cup of tea??

the answer: in the first sentence means what about having a cup of tea while in the second someone is asking if he have a cup of tea

Almost there. All ok apart from:

1) The girl drowned. The girl is dead and this tells you how she died - she drowned.

The girl is drowing. The girl is in the water drowning at this moment.

2. my father lived in america all his life - he is now dead but spent his whole life in America. Your comment suggests that he could now be living elsewhere.
