what is the right word?

Hi,

(1) He started his career as a budding young scientist.

I guess this sentence is OK?

What is the opposite of "to start" in this context?

He is going to finish(?) his career as a school teacher and start his own business.

Is it possible to convey the same idea using the verb "to resign"?

(2) What words may be used in negative contexts, such as:

He is going to end up as a night watchman at a local liquor store...

Are there other verbs/phrasal verbs that might be used for "to end up" here?
