What is the proper way to write dates in official letters?

Dear EnglishForward members,

Could you please give me a hand? The situation is as follows: I’ve just replied to the invitation for the interview for the position of my dreams, yet I was so excited and overwhelmed with positive emotions, that to my great shame I made a rather silly mistake, having typed the date of the interview in an inappropriate way.

I know that according to the grammar rules it must be either “on the 10th of December” or “on 10 December” (here the article, the ending, and the preposition “of” are omitted). My variant was “on 10 of December”. So as you can see I’ve got a sort of hybrid, since I’ve omitted everything, except for the preposition “of”.

I need to know how this undeliberate deviation from the rule could be perceived by a native speaker, would he/she treat it as a spelling mistake, a normal omission or a matter of thoughtlessness?

I’m simply on tenterhooks, since I’m afraid it can be treated as a spelling mistake by my employer-to-be. Thanks a lot for your help!

Kind regards,

Katherine

Thank you so much, Clive! But what if he or she got a sight of this gaffe of mine? The point is the position I've applied to requires a great amount of accuracy and preciseness, for it is related to the sphere of writing. I'm afraid that the reader could notice it and think of me as an inaccurate person or even as a person who doesn't know the rules of composing of correspondence. Anyway was it a

I don't see it as anything but trivial. Good luck! Be positive.

It's the interview that counts.
