What is the pronoun used to refer someone you don't know his/her sex?

If, for example, we are talking about someone that we don't know his/her sex, e.g. when an officer is talking about a suspect but he doesn't yet know the sex of the suspect, or when we are talking about someone online but we cannot guess the sex from the online nick. What is the pronoun used? He or She or He/She (and his/her)? In my language (Not English), there is no sex (i.e. he or she) for pronoun which is very mind-free
