I have a problem, may be very easy. In the following sentence

what is the part of speech of "result"?
Also, what is the function of "that"?

"That result" is a relative clause.
"That" is a relative pronoun, and the subject of the clause. "number" is its antecedent.
"Result" is the verb in the rel

But why do not use results, since number is a singular form.
Maybe "figures" is antecedent?

I've been struggling with that, as you may have surmised. "Figures" does seem the best way to go.

The number of men that survive depends on the temperature of the water.

In this case, "men" is clearly the antecedent. I guess in the other case too!
