What is the meaning or role of "for" before a question clause?

The following the sentence I am trying to understand.

Thus, the masses were entertained and pleased, and the thinking part of the community could bring no charge of unfairness against this plan, for did not the accused person have the whole matter in his own hands?

I don't quite understand the meaning or role of "for" preceding "did not the accused..."

MM, may need to comment further, but there is another reason I think this may be awkward to your ear:

for/because the accused person did not have the is the standard word orer--though I'm unsure why the inversion has occured.

So, I must study more for the usage of "for" as "because". Thank you.
