What is the meaning of Upto?

What it the actual meaning of Upto? I often hear the sentences like "What you are upto?" But I could not understand the actual meaning. Can you please tell?

Sorry, but I'm not sure what you mean.

It's possible, in the right context, but I'd expect to hear:

What level are you up to?
What number are you up to?
What chapter are you up to?


When you ask a question like yours, you need to supply the context. When do you hear the question? Where are you? What are you doing.? Who's asking you? If not, we can only guess at the meaning.

I meant that when ever I was said that word i.e. up to or the sentence "what you are up to?", I always guessed from the context that it mean what is my level of career etc etc. Now hope you get what i wanted to say.

If someone says "What are you up to?" thet are NOT asking how far you have advanced in your career, your salary level, etc.

"What are you up to?" can mean "What are you doing?"

A: Kids, my gosh, look at this mess in here! Whatever are you up to? = What have you been doing that has made such a mess.

Just to either make your more confused or more enlightened (I"m not sure which):

"Hey, what's up?" is a common, informal, and friendly greeting in the US.

No. That is said as "What have you been up to?" It asks what someone has been doing during some time when you have not seen them.
