Hi,

A boxer's 'guard' refers to the way he puts his arms and fists up to protect himself. I suppose you could say he 'takes guard' if he does that, but it's not a common phrase. I'd say 'he takes his guard' or, mor often, 'he puts up his guard'.

A fencer 'comes on guard'.

I found via Google that a cricket batsman is sometimes said to 'take guard'.
