What is the meaning of "throws open the grate"?

The elevator shimmies to a stop on the top floor. Leslie throws open the grate and says, “Do you have any other questions?”

Old-fashioned elevators were a sort of open cagework affair, and the front of the cage was a scissors-style folding gate that slid aside to allow a passenger to open the door proper at the floor it stopped at. This writer calls it a grate, and I am not old enough to know whether they were called that or not.
